Westlife mania invades historic castle
31 Aug 2010 by Villy
TALKS are already under way to find an artist to follow Westlife, two days after the Irish boy band played Cawdor Castle's first open air concert.

Management for three well-known artists attended Saturday night's concert and talks are now taking place between them and promoters CK Events, which has signed a five-year deal to hold gigs at the castle.

"We are talking to three artists - their management came up to see the venue and loved it," promoter Les Kidger explained.

Cawdor Castle welcomed just under 3500 fans on Friday for a night with X Factor stars including Jamie "Afro" Archer and chart-topper Olly Murs, who told the crowd he would strip naked if his single "Please Don't Let Me Go" goes to number one.

Saturday saw 12,000 fans - almost a sell-out - descend on Cawdor. The MacDonald Brothers warmed up the crowd with old favourites like "Caledonia" and "Loch Lomond" before Irish girl group Wonderland - featuring Westlife's Kian Egan's wife and former Hollyoaks actress Jodi Albert - took to the stage.

Westlife came on around 9pm to a wave of high-pitched screams and what proved to be an energetic set, featuring at least three costume changes.

The set included songs from the band's back catalogue - which, believe it or not, dates back 11 years - with favourites like "When You're Looking Like That", "If I Let You Go", "Uptown Girl" and "Mandy."

A series of fun covers followed including Black Eye Peas' "I've Got A Feeling", Beyonce's "Halo", and Kings of Leon chart topper "Sex on Fire", before the band returned to its big hits "Flying Without Wings" and "World of Our Own" and a fireworks display, which brought down the curtain on the Westlife tour and the band's most northerly concert.

Mr Kidger described it as a "fantastic" weekend, but admitted some lessons would have to be learnt for next year.

"I was very happy with the way things went," he said.

"Friday night was very good, there was a real party atmosphere, and Saturday was just amazing. It was the last night of the tour and Westlife were in top form. I spoke to the guys afterwards and they loved it."

The promoters, which also brought Rod Stewart to the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium in Inverness earlier this year, will now hold a series of de-brief meetings to assess Cawdor's first concert, with parking and transport likely to be high on the agenda.

"Obviously we need to look at some areas - drop off and pick up and parking," Mr Kidger said. "We will take the issues on board and take it from there."

With no shuttle buses on, heavy traffic meant it took some people up to two hours to leave the venue, while others waited at the taxi rank for more than four hours.

Despite some skidding, no vehicles had to be towed from the car park on Saturday, although some got stuck in Friday's wet weather.

There were also some complaints about poor lighting in the car park and difficulties locating cars in the mass of vehicles.

"The car park cleared in under the estimated time on Saturday," Mr Kidger said.

"There was a large volume of cars. With everyone leaving at the same time, you are always going to have an initial delay."

At the taxi rank, blankets were handed out to fans by the ambulance service, while the police organised some mini-buses to get people home because of the delay.

There were no major incidents although three people were arrested on Saturday, one for minor assault and two for breach of the peace.

"Generally the crowd were very well behaved," a police spokesman said.

The ambulance service also treated a number of people for the effects of alcohol.

Westlife still melting hearts after more than a decade at the top
30 Aug 2010 by Villy
AROUND 12,000 THRILLED BY IRISH BOYBAND ON LAST DATE OF THEIR UK AND IRISH TOUR

BY CHERYL LIVINGSTONE AND LAURA PATERSON

Thousands of hearts melted as chart-toppers Westlife treated fans to an emotionally-charged performance at the close of a weekend of concerts at Cawdor Castle.

Supported by X Factor's Macdonald Brothers and girl-band Wonderland, the Irish quartet were welcomed to the stage by a wave of high-pitched screams from the 12,000-strong crowd on Saturday night.

The band kicked off the show with Where We Are, a track from their new album of the same name, shortly followed by their new single, What About Now.

It wasn't long before the boys were digging into their back catalogue of number ones, with performances of the fun-loving When You're Looking Like That, the tear-jerking If I Let You Go and crowd-pleasers Uptown Girl and Mandy.

Westlife first appeared on the pop music scene in 1999 with their self-titled debut album.

Now, 11 years later, their sound, which has made women and girls of all ages go weak at the knees for over a decade, is as fresh and heart-felt as ever.

The Inverness concert was the last stop on the boy's Where We Are Tour, which saw them play sell-out shows across the UK and Ireland.

Singer Shane Filan told fans at the concert on Saturday that they chose to end their tour in the Highlands because “it's a beautiful venue” and they “always get the best welcome from Scottish fans”.

Mr Filan, along with fellow bandmates Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, and Nicky Byrne, added a special twist to the night by giving energetic performances of Black Eye Peas' I've Got A Feeling, Beyonce's Halo, the 1970s classic The Boys Are Back in Town and rounded off the set with a rocky rendition of the Kings of Leon's chart topper Sex on Fire.

And if an hour of Westlife bliss wasn't enough, the Irish foursome returned to the stage to do what they do best by belting out two of their most popular hits.

Flying Without Wings and World of Our Own drew the curtain on a night that is sure to have cemented Westlife's spot at the top of the boyband league for at least another 11 years.

On Friday night, Cawdor Castle hosted its first concert, featuring stars from the X Factor.

However, one singer failed to appear.

Spanish singer Ruth Lorenzo was forced to pull out at the last minute due to “other commitments”, event promoter Les Kidger said.

He added: “We received notification on Thursday evening that she wasn¢t able to make it.”

Promotions company CK Events tried to get another X Factor artist as a replacement but none of the X Factor stable were able to play due to scheduling commitments.

Olly Murs, last year¢s X Factor runner-up, and Jamie “Afro” Archer both played longer sets in front of a crowd of 3,400 to make up for the missing singer. Mr Kidger said: “Olly was fantastic. He brought the house down.”

This was the second scheduling change to hit the event.

Olly Murs was originally brought in as a replacement for pop twins Jedward who were forced to cancel earlier this month due to injury.

The concert was also hit by torrential rain which turned the car park into a quagmire some cars having to be pulled free of the mud.

Mr Kidger said: “Everything went well. We had a crew on standby and tractors going out. The car park clearing time was efficient.”

Westlife's Kian prepares for blast-off with girlband single
27 Aug 2010 by Villy
By Melanie Finn

Westlife's Kian Egan has revealed how he's busy planning the next step for his new Irish girlband Wonderland - and they're gearing up to hit our small screens this October.

The sexy fivesome spent weeks filming a documentary for ITV2 as they follow in the footsteps of X Factor's Jedward with a fly-on-the-wall show of their own.

Provisionally called The Management, the show will reveal all about the search for a new girlband, which saw thousands of hopefuls turn up for auditions in Dublin.

Managed jointly by Louis Walsh and Kian, the line-up for the girlband was confirmed more than a year ago, but the band has yet to release a single. However, Kian explained how it's all part of a carefully devised plan to launch them on the pop market at the right time.

"We're going to wait until the documentary comes out first. We think that's going to be around the end of October, and then we're going to put out their first single. It's very much full steam ahead," he told the Herald.

The girlband were signed up after a nationwide search lasting several months, with the band making their debut on the Late Late Show in December 2008.

They made their stage debut last May after they joined Westlife on their UK and Ireland tour Where We Are. They started their Irish career in style by taking to the stage as the support act for the group's Croke Park concert on June 5, which represented their first series of concerts since taking a year-long break.

Signed to Mercury Records, the group is made up of Kian's wife, Jodi Albert (27), alongside Kasey Smith (20), Corina Dunne (24), Sharon Condon (24) and Leigh Learmont (21).

Most recently, the girls performed with the band at their sell-out show in Lissadell House. And now lead member Jodi, who married Kian in Barbados last year, said they are ready to take on the world as they gear up to release their debut single this autumn.

However, she has ruled out following in the footsteps of bands like Girls Aloud, saying there's no way they'll be seen cavorting on stage in overtly sexy outfits.

"We have our own style and we're not going to sell out and pose in skimpy underwear just to get attention," she said.

Westlife blazing a trail for more gigs at Cawdor Castle
27 Aug 2010 by Villy
AMONG the 12,000 people watching Irish pop stars Westlife at Cawdor Castle tomorrow will be some taking a very professional interest in what is going in the 14th century's fortress's grounds.

While fans of the Irish foursome will be concentrating on the music, Cawdor will also host a number of industry experts who may be pondering on how their acts might fit with the venue or another Highland location.

Promoter Les Kidger of CK Events, the team behind last month's successful Rod Stewart show at Caledonian Stadium, revealed that tomorrow's Westlife show would also be watched by a number of managers and agents considering bringing other big name acts to the north.

Not that he is going to name any names of potential visitors.

"I've already told you too much!" he laughed, but confirmed other acts were being considered for Cawdor, which makes its debut as a music venue this weekend with the stars of ITV's "X-Factor" providing a warm-up before tomorrow's main event with multi-million sellers Westlife.

"We don't know if it will be another boy band, but we will definitely be back," Kidger said.

"We are looking at an early summer show and August as well, but of course it's a completely new venue and I suppose there will be one or two teething troubles which have to be sorted out."

Even if there are, Kidger certainly hopes his visitors from the south will be as impressed as he is by the location with its links to Shakespeare's imagined Macbeth and over 600 years of real Highland history.

"I'm standing at the front of the stage, looking at the infrastructure going in and what a beautiful venue for doing something like this," he said.

Cawdor may be new as a venue for pop concerts - though classical music events and outdoor drama have been held in its grounds for several years - but was firmly placed on the pop world map when Mark Owen of Take That married at Cawdor Kirk last November.

That was followed by castle administrator David Broadfoot, who had expressed an interest in bringing major acts to Cawdor since taking on the job at the castle, signing an agreement with CK Events to bring music to Cawdor.

"Obviously it's taken a lot of hard work and a lot of planning, but it's a great venue and getting Westlife to be the first act to appear here is a great achievement," Kidger said.

"Initially we wanted to play safe for our first concert here, but Rod Stewart was such a success that we decided to push the boat out."

With the combination of Westlife, Rod Stewart and the Stars from the X-Factor, an estimated 37-38,000 tickets will have been sold for concerts in the north of Scotland this year.

While the region already has a number of excellent festivals such as Belladrum and RockNess - an area CK Events has no interest in pursuing - this showed there was a demand for major one-off concerts in the Highlands.

Kidger is already looking for an act for Caledonian Stadium next year, but though he had received a number of requests for Rod Stewart to return, he added that it would not be in 2011, though perhaps a year or two after.

Distance certainly seems to have been no object for Westlife, who earlier this week were busy in the studio working on new material.

"Westlife are playing Friday night in Bangor in north Wales before they come here. We are the last night of their UK tour, so they are coming up here to party. If they are willing to be in Bangor one night and Cawdor the next, that shows there are no concerns about the distance," he said.

One possible source of teething trouble over the weekend is transport to and from the Cawdor estate.

Though a traffic management plan is in place, Kidger pointed out that an event such as the Westlife concert or Rod Stewart's Caledonian Stadium show was equivalent to moving a third of the population of Inverness at one time, so urged people to be patient.

No bus or coach operators have come forward to run special services to or from this weekend's concerts and Kidger acknowledged this is something the organisers may have to look at for the future, depending on how smoothly things run this weekend.

Kidger also revealed that he had been talking to some other potential north venues, but mainly for smaller scale and more specialised events such as jazz. CK Events is still looking at some larger potential venues further south.

"If we have those, it might make it easier to bring acts north," he said.
