CECELIA Ahern’s latest novel may feature a famous radio DJ who’s going through a dark time.
But although her brother-in-law Nicky Byrne is now co- anchoring a popular 2fm radio show, there was no drawing on his real-life experience as inspiration for her eleventh book, The Year I Met You.
Nicky’s flying high with the show which he hosts with Jenny Greene, and Cecelia says it’s a firm favourite in the Ahern household and she always makes time to tune in.
“I listen to it every day. It got nominated for two radio awards and I’m so proud of him,” she said.
“There’s just a lovely chemistry between himself and Jenny. I find myself smiling just listening to it. The pair of them genuinely get on great.”
She said that presenting a radio show was a natural transition for the Westlife star, given his lengthy time with the chart-topping band.
“If you’re hosting a concert in front of 100,000, that’s a huge amount of experience right there, it’s a great CV to have and people love him and he’s naturally nosy. I knew he’d do great,” she said.

Then the label were phoning, going “This is great!” I’d shown to myself I could do this and that took the pressure off. I was flying in those first two weeks and then suddenly I was in Nashville with really famous songwriters, partly thinking ‘WOW!’ but also ‘Right, let’s do this.’”

Halloween Concert Headlined by Kian Egan
Kian Egan already working on second solo album – SIX months after releasing his first
Former Westlife star Kian Egan is already planning on releasing his second solo album.
The I’m A Celebrity winner brought out his first cover-filled solo record Home on Mother’s Day in March.
Now Kian has revealed he’s already started getting the material together for album number two next year.
He said: “There’s talk of another album next year and a solo tour in the next few months.”
But Kian admits he doesn’t care if the new album ends up being a total flop.
He added: “I want to keep making music but I don’t take it too seriously. That’s the great thing about it.
“It’s completely different from Westlife. I’m having a laugh and seeing where it goes.”
His bandmate Shane Filan has released a solo album as well, and is currently touring it around the world.
Both Mark Feehily and Nicky Byrne are also working on solo material – but aren’t in a major rush to get it out.
Ex-Westlife star Shane on bouncing back from bankruptcy: “I’m Filan a lot better about my life these days”

The 35-year-old singer is putting the nightmare behind him with a new book and an Asia tour
Former Westlife singer Shane Filan is heading back into the black after emerging from bankruptcy.
The 35-year-old suffered losses thought to top €22million when the economic slump wiped out his property investments.
He took the drastic step of declaring himself bankrupt in 2012, but yesterday told The Irish Mirror: “I’m good, I’m doing a lot better than I was.
“The past few years were very difficult but I’m at a stage now where I’m focused and I’m happy.”
But the scars still remain for Sligo man Filan, who writes about the financial nightmare in his autobiography, My Side Of Life, due out next month.
He said: “It’s a very honest book, very true. It brings back a lot of hard memories for me and to a time where I was very scared and anxious, I had three small children to support.
“I hope it helps. People have done very drastic things when going through financial problems and I hope it can prevent some of that.”
Next up for Filan is a three-week tour of South-East Asia, where he has a huge fan base.
He added: “The last time when I got to airports there, there were crowds of 100 or 200 fans. It brings you back to the Westlife crazy days.”
But now the man band are no longer on the go, Filan revealed he rarely bumps into his old pals. He added: “It is kind of like you go to school with someone for a very long time and then you go to different colleges.
“If we see each other it’s great but we don’t keep in touch regularly and we don’t call each other.
“People finish bands and drift apart. We definitely have drifted apart.”
Shane also said that he could not see himself following Kian Egan’s steps into the I’m A Celebrity jungle.
He explained: “The worst for me would probably be rats and sleeping in the woods. I talked to Kian about it and he was saying how hungry you are.”
Shane has started writing his new album last week and said fans can expect more of the ballads that Westlife were known for.
He added while it has been an adjustment to go from playing huge arenas such as Croke Park, he is enjoying the intimacy and fun of smaller venues.
When on tour he longs for his wife Gillian and children Nicole, nine, Patrick, six, and four-year-old Shane who are based in England.
He gushes: “You miss them so much after a week you actually ache for them.”
Shane plays the Olympia in Dublin on December 2, the last night of his You And Me tour.

2FM star is up for Best Newcomer and his popular programme with Jenny Greene is up for Best Music Programme
Ex Westlife singer Nicky Byrne is flying without wings after landing two nominations in the prestigious PPI Radio Awards.
The 2FM star may only be a few months in the job but he’s up for Best Newcomer and his popular programme with Jenny Greene – The Nicky Byrne Show – is up for Best Music Programme.
“I’m beyond chuffed with the two nominations for the show. Jenny, along with Producer Al, Lindy and Kate have become my on air family,” he told the Irish Mirror yesterday.
“It’s a very, very exciting time in 2fm and I’m really looking forward to the PPI Awards in October, it’s a black tie affair so I can’t wait to stick an old Westlife suit, wait…can you wear white?”
The national broadcaster lead the charge with a total of 32 nominations across the various categories.
Today FM new boys on the block Dermot (Whelan) and Dave (Moore) are nominated for their previous alma mater show on 98FM.
And Louise Duffy is up for Best Radio DJ despite her Today FM show being axed.
Louise, 30, who is engaged to ex GAA star Paul Galvin, 34, lost The Louise Duffy show last week, and was replaced by Dermot and Dave.
The Co Mayo beauty had been anchoring her own 12-12.30pm show since last April and has been going down a storm with listeners.
She is set to take over a prime time slot on the station this month.
Louise is one of three women including Shona Murray, who’s up for Best News Reporter and Sandy Harsch who’s up for Specialist Music Broadcaster of the year to be nominated.
Model and SPIN presenter Daniella Moyles has slammed the radio awards for the lack of females in the line up.
“Ugh this may appear to come from somewhere other than genuine curiosity, but 3 female nominees out of 40? Pretty (heartbreaking) for women in radio,” she wrote on Twitter.
But a spokeswoman for the awards said that the list was judged by 81 industry professionals.
“We don’t choose the nominees. The stations all put in people into the categories. That’s a very long list and then each category is judged by 81 people.
“They make the long list into a short list,” she said.
The awards received the highest number ever of entries in their 14 year history with 635 in total, with every station in Ireland and most in Northern Ireland submitting shows for consideration across all areas of radio including music, news, sport, speech, entertainment and comedy.
The Gala Awards takes place at the Lyrath Estate Hotel, Kilkenny on Friday October 3, and will include all the big stars of radio.
