FORMER Westlife star Nicky Byrne has told of how ending up in the bottom two on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ has given him more focus and made him work harder to compete.

Speaking to the Irish Independent during a closed dance rehearsal in Dublin ahead of tomorrow’s live round of the BBC show, the 33-year-old admitted he was disappointed with his performance.

He and his partner Karen Hauer (30) performed a waltz but did not impress the judges.

“It was a bit savaging last week,” he said.

“We had the waltz down to a tee last week in Dublin and then I went to England, walked in for a run-through and I forgot it all as soon as I got on the floor. It’s very intimidating being on the ‘Strictly’ set.

“That’s why I’m working extra hard this week, to make sure I’m not in that position again.”

The father-of-two will perform a version of the Cha Cha on tomorrow’s live show.

By COLIN ROBERTSON

STRICTLY’S Nicky Byrne has been nicknamed GLITTERBALLS thanks to his slinky moves on the dance floor.

The former Westlife star was given the moniker by his sister-in-law.

And she is not the only one taking the mickey — Nicky’s wife of nine years, Georgina, has been mocking him for his daft dance clobber.

But the singer says Georgina loves his transformation from bar stool crooner to ballroom dancer.

He said: “My wife is buzzing with excitement. She will come to all the shows — we are very much a team.

“Her sister, Cecelia, nicknamed me Glitterballs and now that’s the running joke in my family.

“I like to put a smile on their faces.”

Nicky admits he needs a new wardrobe: “After seeing my first dance, Georgina could not stop laughing for ten minutes “She told me, ‘Seriously, you need to change your style’.

“And when I watched myself afterwards, I was like, ‘Oh no!’ I had Cuban heels with ankle socks and shorts! My legs looked so white. I am not sure I am ready for fake tan yet but everyone tells me the wall does come down eventually.

“I guess a lick of paint is not the worst thing in the world.”

Nicky will perform the waltz on the first live show with dance partner Karen Hauer. The raven-haired World Mambo champion is new to the show’s professional line-up.

Nicky says he is finding ballroom far harder than singing on stage.

He said: “Early on with Westlife it was challenging and this is definitely a different kind of challenge. It’s hard. Karen is great. She is patient but she is no walkover either.

“She won’t let me sit and have a coffee. I am putting in five hours of training every day. But I love it.”

Nicky says that years of performing in a boy band have been no help to him at all: “When we sang in a TV studio, it was always a ballad and so we were either sitting on stools or standing.

“When we were on tour, we danced but we didn’t have anyone judging us and it was all a bit of fun.

“This is completely different.

“Kimberley Walsh from Girls Aloud is in a similar position to me, only she went to stage school too.

“I love all the rivalry that is going on with Kimberley and I.”

DESPITE being a member of one of the most successful boy bands of all time, former Westlife star Nicky Byrne has admitted that he has absolutely no dancing skills.

No surprise really, given that the most complicated move the boys had to master was standing up during a key change.

“I’m well used to stools,” the Dubliner joked. Nicky is currently taking part in Strictly Come Dancing and admits that at times training can be a challenge. “When it comes to Strictly I have two left feet.”

The 33-year-old said that Strictly is one of the few reality TV shows he considered taking part in.

“I wouldn’t do any of the other reality TV shows” he told the Diary, “but Strictly is different.”

Glitzy

Nicky went on to say that he was drawn to the glitzy world of ballroom dancing for two very different reasons.

“I used to be a bit against the whole reality TV thing, but Strictly appealed because you actually learn something. You’re learning a new skill, a talent. You’re going into a whole new world so that was a big buzz for me.”

Wife Georgina Ahern also encouraged him to throw on the spandex pants, rhinestone shirts and learn how to quickstep.

“Georgina’s always been a big fan of the show, she’s watched it for a good few years. And she always said ‘you’d be alright on that. You should give it a bash.’ So there were a lot of positives. I’m loving the experience.”

Nicky is rehearsing in Dublin so he can spend as much time as possible with his twin sons Jay and Rocco (5) who recently started school.

But one group Nicky is missing is Westlife, with Nicky admitting it is strange not having the lads on his side. “I think all the lads are feeling a little strange. We’ve been together for fourteen years so it’s going to be a bit bizarre.”

The star said he was still getting used to the change of lifestyle.

“It’s a big change and sometimes that hits you. This time last year, we were in South Africa, filming a video and watching Dublin win the All Ireland.

“This year I was in sitting in my house, on my own, watching Donegal win. I kept thinking — last year I was on top of a mountain and now, well now, I’m here. It’s about growing up really. I do miss them but you’ve got to grow up.”

Former band mate, Kian Egan is also taking the TV world by storm. Not only is he a judge on RTE’s The Voice, but Kian recently announced that he will co-host UTV’s show Surprise, Surprise alongside UK sweetheart Holly Willoughby.

Nicky had nothing but praise for Kian.

“I was talking to him last week and he’s flying. He’s doing brilliant — I wish him all the best.”

On the work front, things are also looking up for football fanatic Nicky.

He will be presenting Football’s Next Star on RTE. “I’ve always said I want to get into presenting” Nicky told The Diary.

“TV or radio. I said that even when I was still in Westlife.”

THE CELTIC manager joked about the group of middle-aged women when he appeared on Irish TV programme The Late Late Show.

NEIL LENNON has told how he went to greet female fans – only to learn they were really after Westlife star Nicky Byrne.

The Celtic boss revealed on an Irish chat show he was left red-faced by the gaffe outside the Hoops’ training ground.

Neil, 41, was with Nicky on The Late Late Show when he told host Ryan Tubridy: “One day I turned up and there was a large group of middle-aged women. So as you do, you show your manners and pull over for an autograph and they were all, ‘Neil, is Nicky Byrne here? I have taken the day off work to see him.’

“For security reasons, we could only let four or five in and we made Nicky get changed and train with some of the guys. It made these women’s day.”

Neil and Nicky were on the programme to promote RTE show Football’s Next Star – that will find a new player for the Hoops.

The singer will work with the club he supports to find the best prospect from thousands of hopefuls. He said: “With my football background, I thought this is a great opportunity for me to go back to my roots.

“And also since Westlife I have always wanted to get into TV.”

He said of his time working with the club: “Celtic has this old-fashioned homely vibe.

“You walk in and the women on reception come up and give you a hug and a cup of tea.”

But Lennon joked: “They don’t do that with me.”

Lennon revealed he finally feels safe again in Glasgow.

He said: “Glasgow has been my home for 12 years. I have a boy who is six years of age who loves life there and loves what I do in the football scene.”

Jamelia joins The Voice Of Ireland – British singer Jamelia was last night unveiled as the new coach on The Voice of Ireland.

The 31-year-old singer joins Kian Egan, Bressie and Sharon Corr as a coach on the upcoming, second season of the popular singing competition.

Speaking to Ryan Tubridy during an appearance on The Late Late Show last night, the singer confirmed her new position. She will replace Brian Kennedy, who will not be appearing in the next season due to scheduling issues.

“I jumped at the chance,” the singer told Tubridy. “This is an amazing opportunity and I am especially looking forward to being part of someone else’s career and passing on the torch and I can’t wait to meet the other coaches.”

Speaking about what she will bring to the coaching table, she said: “I’m an R&B singer and I don’t think you had much of that last season. I’m really looking forward to bringing that out in the Irish.”

“I can’t lie, I have to be honest,” she responded to Tubridy when asked if she will be a mean judge. “I don’t think it serves people by lying to them so it’s better to tell them the truth. I think Sharon needed another girl too, we needed a bit of girl power!”

Jamelia had her big break at the age of 15 when she was signed by EMI after hearing her sing on a cassette tape. Jamelia, last name Davis, went on to have three chart-topping albums which produced seven Top 10 UK singles. The singer has won four MOBO Awards, two Q Awards and eight Brit Award nominations.

The Voice of Ireland returns to RTÉ One early next year.

WESTLIFE’S Nicky Byrne has joined Giovanni Trapattoni’s critics in suggesting Ireland needs a new manager.

The singer insisted the time for 73-year-old Trapattoni to step down has come.

“I think Trap’s done great, but I would like to see somebody else come in, pretty soon. Somebody like Harry Redknapp would be great because the players would know him, get on with him, understand him and when you’ve a happy squad, you get results.

“I think it would be good to see someone else at the helm now,” he said.

“I’m not a footballer at the end of the day. But for me, it’s blatant to see that there are a lot of young lads that could be coming through (but) are being left out,” added Byrne.

The 33-year-old was speaking at a screening of upcoming RTE series, ‘Football’s Next Star’, in Dublin yesterday.

The series features 10 young Irish footballers compete for a contract at Celtic Football Club’s Youth Academy, with one player sent home every week.

The opening episode will air on RTE Two on October 5.
